NSMC Urologists Perform Complex Surgery on a 63-Year-Old Patient with a Solitary Kidne

Urologists at the National Scientific Medical Center (NSMC) in Astana successfully performed a minimally invasive procedure on a 63-year-old woman with a solitary kidney, removing all kidney stones through an incision measuring less than one centimeter.

On September 16, the patient was admitted to the National Scientific Medical Center with kidney stone disease (urolithiasis) and a urinary tract infection.

Surgical treatment of patients with a solitary kidney requires particularly careful planning and preparation. Before the procedure, the medical team carried out the necessary preoperative measures, taking the existing infection into account and aiming to minimize the risk of potential complications.

On September 18, the patient underwent percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) of the right kidney. During the procedure, all stones were removed through a small incision measuring less than one centimeter. This minimally invasive technique helps reduce surgical trauma while preserving kidney function as much as possible.

According to Erbol Iskakov, PhD, Head of the Urology Department at the National Scientific Medical Center and a urologist of the highest qualification category, this type of procedure does not require a large surgical incision.

"A small puncture is made in the lumbar region to create a narrow access channel to the kidney. A specialized instrument is then inserted through this channel, allowing the stones to be fragmented using a laser and completely removed. The main advantage of this technique is minimal surgical trauma and faster patient recovery," the doctor explained.

The patient was able to start moving independently as early as the day after surgery. The drainage tubes were removed on the second postoperative day, and she was discharged home in satisfactory condition on the fourth day. She will continue to receive follow-up care from a urologist.

The patient, Lazzat Dauletova, expressed her sincere gratitude to the doctors and medical staff of the National Scientific Medical Center. According to her, she traveled from Uralsk to Astana on September 16 specifically to receive treatment and undergo surgery.

"In 2017, I underwent surgery during which one of my kidneys had to be removed. Over time, stones developed in my only remaining kidney, and I sought medical assistance because of severe pain.

From my very first day at the center, I was welcomed with warmth, care, and attention by all the doctors and nurses. I am sincerely grateful to every healthcare professional for their compassion, kindness, and support. Their caring attitude gave me tremendous emotional strength.

I would especially like to thank Dr. Dauren Aitzhanuly. Before the operation, he carefully explained how complex and risky the procedure would be, including all the possible complications. Despite these challenges, he made every effort to protect my health, demonstrating outstanding professionalism, knowledge, and extensive experience.

According to her attending physician, Dauren Abdyrov, patients with a solitary kidney require special attention throughout every stage of medical care, from diagnosis to the selection of the most appropriate surgical approach.

"In such cases, our primary goal is not simply to remove the stones but to preserve the function of the patient's only kidney as much as possible. Therefore, thorough preoperative preparation is essential, and the treatment strategy must be carefully selected with consideration of any existing infection. In this case, we successfully removed all the stones through an incision measuring less than one centimeter, minimizing surgical trauma as much as possible," said Dauren Abdyrov.

The National Scientific Medical Center routinely performs procedures of this kind. Kidney stone disease is among the most common conditions encountered in urological practice. Each year, approximately 250–300 patients undergo surgical treatment for kidney stones at the center.

Today, the National Scientific Medical Center utilizes modern medical equipment and minimally invasive technologies. These capabilities enable specialists to perform advanced urological procedures while taking into account each patient's individual clinical condition and treatment needs.
